Influence of Construction Joint and Bridge Geometry on Integral Abutment Bridges

چکیده
Although integral abutment bridges (IABs) have become a preferred construction choice for short- to medium-length bridges, they still unclear bridge design guidelines. As IABs are supported by nonlinear boundaries, geometric parameters strongly affect IAB behavior and complicate predicting the response assessment purposes. This study demonstrates effect of four dominant parameters: (1) girder material, (2) length, (3) backfill height, (4) joint below seats on rise fall AASHTO extreme temperature with time-dependent effects in concrete materials. The factors influencing response, such as timeline, thermal expansion coefficient, stiffness, pile-soil assumed be constant. To compare material geometry influence, evaluates critical superstructure substructure axial force, bending moment, pile head displacement. All values were related considered parameters, while not always linearly proportional. Prestressed (PSC) did differ significantly from steel response. Forces moments induced movements loads negligible should process.

Performance Evaluation of Integral Abutment Bridges
To establish a maximum safe length and design details for zero skew steel and concrete bridges with integral abutments, a survey of the highway departments of all 50 states was conducted. The findings of the survey include maximum lengths of integral abutment bridges being constructed, advantages and disadvantages of these bridges as perceived by the various states, and the extent of field obse...
متن کاملMonitoring of a Swedish Integral Abutment Bridge
One of the most commonly discussed problems regarding bridges with integral abutments is the influence of longitudinal elongation of the superstructure as a result of seasonal temperature variations. A bridge built with integral abutments is often supported by a row of piles made of steel or concrete. The longitudinal elongation of the superstructure induces a displacement and a rotation at the...
متن کاملEarth Pressure behind an Integral Bridge Abutment and Comparison with that behind a Conventional Bridge Abutment under Traffic Loads
Integral bridges are gaining increased popularity because of both economic and fast construction associated with the omission of bearing supports and expansion joints. In the present study the cyclic earth pressure behind integral bridge abutments under traffic surcharges are investigated and compared with that induced behind the abutment of conventional bridges (with isolated deck and abutme...
متن کاملModelling of Soil Structure Interaction of Integral Abutment Bridges
Integral Abutment Bridges (IAB) are defined as simple or multiple span bridges in which the bridge deck is cast monolithically with the abutment walls. This kind of bridges are becoming very popular due to different aspects such as good response under seismic loading, low initial costs, elimination of bearings, and less maintenance. However the main issue related to the analysis of this type of...
متن کاملDesign Considerations for Integral Abutment/ Jointless Bridges in the USA
This paper summarizes results of a major study on jointless bridges sponsored by the U.S. Federal Highway Administration. This study included extensive laboratory and field experiments as well as detailed analytical studies. A set of design recommendations were provided. Jointless bridges have reduced maintenance, improved riding quality, lower impact loads, reduced snowplow damage, and structu...
